why you should bring your child to see a naturopathic doctor

Some background info
Obesity is on the rise. Over the last 40 years, obesity in children and adolescents has increased significantly. From 1978-1979, 1 in 4 children were overweight or obese. Now, it’s closer to 1 in 3. One study of over 3000 Canadian youth found that those adolescents with lower fitness levels had increased estimates of CVD risk factors (we’re talking triglycerides, cholesterol, and blood pressure). We know that physical activity is great for keeping the pounds off, but it’s also important for metabolizing sugar properly, keeping our blood pressure in check, and preventing diabetes. But here’s the shocker: only 16% of Canadians are meeting physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week. That means 84% of adults are letting only 21 minutes of activity per day increase their risk of cardiovascular disease.

Why does it matter?
Obesity is directly related to metabolic conditions- type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep disorders, mental health disorders, and even joint problems. If we’re not enforcing some form of movement in children while they’re young, they’re less likely to be active as adults. The same goes for healthy eating. Instilling healthy exercise & eating habits from a young age is crucial in creating healthy adolescents- who will go on to be healthy adults.

So what should we do?
We need to encourage physical activity in a way kids enjoy. Letting kids pick which sports they’re involved in allows them to feel like they have control, making them more likely to continue the sport as they age. Limiting screen time is also important, as increased screen time has led to declines in physical activity.

By 3 months of age, babies should have a total of 60 minutes of tummy time per day- broken up into smaller chunks. Infants younger than 18 months should not be exposed to screens, unless video calling with a family member.

Children age 3-5 should be active throughout the day to encourage proper growth & development. Screen time should be limited to 1 hour per day (or less), and should be educational programs or video calling with family members.

Children age 6-17 should be active for a minimum of 60 minutes every day. This should include a mixture of aerobic exercises (like playing soccer, swimming, or running), climbing or pushing objects, and jumping. This combination of exercises ensures healthy hearts and proper bone development- preventing cardiovascular disease & osteoporosis as they become adults. Screen time will differ depending on your child & their needs, but a firm no-screens in the bedroom rule works for many families, and encourages proper sleep function.

For all ages-childhood to adulthood-incorporating enough vegetables, fruit, protein, and healthy fats is a key factor in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases.

Why work with both your pediatrician and your ND
Your pediatrician plays a vital role in your child’s health. However, NDs who have experience & training in pediatrics have a strong focus & background in prevention of disease . Not only are NDs focused on treating illness and preventing deficiencies, but they are also trained in optimal health & nutrition. Optimal health is often neglected in the Canadian public healthcare system because the focus is on preventing deficiency- not obtaining optimal health. Medical doctors often don't have enough allocated time to discuss your child's diet in depth during the visit, but NDs will take a thorough history & discuss specific nutrition goals that might benefit your child. Naturopathic Doctors can also diagnose common childhood conditions, and treat them using gentler options. Some common conditions NDs can help your child with include eczema, constipation, respiratory infections, sleep issues, ADHD & autism.

Overall, ND's offer a more individualized approach to prevention of chronic disease & promotion of optimal health from infancy to adulthood.

Let's talk about the booty

Alright let’s talk about something that we keep hush-hush at family get togethers but keeps some people (75% of the population to be precise!) from enjoying every day activities. I’m talking hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are like varicose veins in the legs, but around the anus.

You might not be able to see the hemorrhoid, but you might have one if you experience:
~itching, pain, or irritation around the anus
~bleeding (bright red blood in the toilet or on toilet paper when you wipe)
-a hard lump or protrusion from the anus

Hemorrhoids can occur inside the rectum (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external). They occur when the veins around the anal area have inreased pressure within them. Some things that can cause this to happen include:
~straining when having a bowel movement
~chronic diarrhea/chronic constipation
~being overweight
~being pregnant
~having anal intercourse
~eating a diet low in fiber
~old age

OK. So you have a hemorrhoid. So what? You need to treat hemorrhoids because not only are they uncomfortable, but they also put you at risk for anemia due to blood loss and a blood clot in the hemorrhoid which can be extremely painful!

Hemorrhoids can be taken care of at home, or they may require a trip to the doctor. Seek medical care if you have a change in bowel habits (colour, consistency, frequency), large amounts of rectal bleeding, dizziness, or if the hemorrhoids don’t resolve within 7 days. It’s super important that you see a doctor if the hemorrhoid doesn’t resolve quickly- as it could indicate a more serious condition that needs to be addressed.

Topical solutions only are NOT appropriate for the treatment of hemorrhoids. The cause of the hemorrhoid needs to be addressed. The cause is quite often constipation, which can be due to a number of issues.

The Hemorrhoid First Aid Kit
~high fiber foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, psyllium, oats)
  • Eating foods high in soluble fibre will create a ‘gel’, bulking yet softening the stool, decreasing the pressure on the rectum & anus. This should not be used as an acute treatment for hemorrhoids! It’s a long term solution to preventing the next flare up.
  • I didn't want to call this the hemorrhoid smoothie but....maybe we will...
    • CHOCOLATE FIBRE SMOOTHIE
      • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (vegan if you have a sensitivity to dairy products)
      • 1 banana
      • 1-2 cups of water or unsweetened almond/oat/soy milk (based on consistency you like)
      • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
      • 1 tablespoon psyllium husk
      • 2-5 ice cubes
~witch hazel
  • Witch hazel is an astringent, meaning it tightens and tonifies. This is helpful in decreasing the time to resolution of hemorrhoids, and improving comfort. Witch hazel can be applied several times per day using a cotton pad soaked in the solution-especially useful immediately after having a bowel movement. When purchasing witch hazel, make sure to purchase alcohol-free. Alcohol is drying and can aggravate the hemorrhoid.
  • If you’re prone to hemmorrhoids, you can create a mixture of witch hazel with coconut oil and keep it in the fridge for use during the duration of the hemmorrhoids. Be sure to use clean hands & a sanitary pad when dipping into the container each time.
~Sitz Bath
  • Soak the anal area for 10-15 minutes 2-3x per day. A sitz bath fits directly over the toilet. Alternatively, you can take a regular bath in plain warm water, but ensure the water has access to the anal area.
  • For added benefit, you can add 2 cups of  epsom salts to the bath to help reduce inflammation & irritation
~aloe vera gel
  • Apply aloe vera gel to the area several times per day. Aloe is especially good at decreasing inflammation and reducing burning. Make sure to buy pure aloe vera gel as other ingredients might be aggravating. When looking at aloe vera products, read the ingredient list and make sure that aloe vera is the very first ingredient on the label.
